Return to the U

If you plan to return to the University after taking time away, there are specific steps to follow before you can register for classes.

Please be aware of the following:

  • Any holds in place prior to your leave will remain in effect upon your return. For example, if you were on academic warning before your time away, you would return to the University on the warning.
  • The college advising office associated with the program you want to pursue will determine your eligibility to return, your status in your degree program, and discuss current degree requirements.
  • Transcripts: If you completed coursework outside of the U of MN system since you were last enrolled at UMD, you will need to submit a request/order to have those transcripts sent to UMD.

Deadlines to apply to return

  • You must submit the Readmission/return from leave of absence request no later than 1 week before the start of the term for which you plan to enroll. View upcoming registration dates.
    • Summer term readmissions begin in early February
    • Fall term readmissions begin in early March
    • Spring term readmissions begin in late September/early October

Steps to return based on your situation

Return as an undergraduate

If you are an undergraduate student and have not been enrolled for at least 2 consecutive semesters (excluding summer), you've been placed on inactive status. To return to active status, follow the instructions below.

  1. Submit the Readmission/return from leave of absence request form at least one week before the start of the term for which you plan to register.
  2. If you have any new coursework since you last attended the UMD, submit the official transcripts to the UMD Office of Admissions.
  3. Your application will be forwarded to the appropriate college for review and readmission decision, which may take up to three weeks. If your application requires an additional review for conduct, it may take longer.
  4. When your request has been processed, you will be notified by email.
  5. Connect with UMD One Stop to discuss financial aid (grants/loans/scholarships) and reciprocity.
    1. Satisfactory Academic Progress - All students receiving financial aid are required to meet SAP standards.
  6. Search for classes you want to take.
  7. Complete your registration online in MyU (learn how to register). We recommend meeting with an academic advisor

For more information view the Leave of Absence and Readmission for Undergraduates Policy.

Return from academic suspension

If you were placed on academic suspension and wish to return, contact the advising and academic services office of the college to which you are seeking enrollment.

Return after you have completed a degree

If you want to take classes to continue your education:

  • Register as a non-degree student without being admitted to a new degree program. Federal or state financial aid is typically not available for guest students. If you are required to complete prerequisite courses before admission to an undergraduate, graduate, or professional program, you may be eligible for Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans. Contact One Stop Student Services and complete a Petition to Reinstate Financial Aid Eligibility form to apply for federal financial aid.
  • To complete another undergraduate degree program different from your first completed degree, contact the college that offers the program. They will provide you with the steps to apply for admission or to enroll. You may be eligible for federal student loans and should complete the FAFSA for the appropriate academic year to apply.
  • To complete an undergraduate minor or additional major after you have finished your degree, register as a non-degree student.
  • Apply for an Undergraduate Certificate

Graduate and professional student readmission

If you were previously an active grad or professional student and are currently on inactive status, you will need to seek readmission. Visit the Graduate School to learn about the readmission process.

When returning to the University, you may need to apply to receive financial aid or to update your residency status for in-state or out-of-state tuition billing. Contact One Stop with questions.
