Petition for Academic Policy or Tuition Refund for UMD Students

  • Work with your academic advisor to determine whether or not to submit an academic petition. Use this form to: 
    Request exceptions to University academic policies, including Liberal Education requirements
  • Drop a class after the deadline
  • Request a tuition refund
  • Change grade basis after the deadline
  • Request a waiver of the late registration fee

Tuition Refund Petitions must be received no later than August 31 of the academic year for which a tuition refund is requested.

  • University academic policy or Liberal Education requirement exception documentation:
    • Course syllabus, or
    • Any other material to support rationale
    • Petitions for the Liberal Education Program require the recommendation of a professional advisor from a collegiate advising office
  • Registration exception documentation
    • Email exchanges between faculty and student or advisor; date/time stamp of the emails need to be viewable in screenshots
    • Letter(s) of support from the department chair or advisor
  • Tuition refund exception documentation
    • Military activation orders, or
    • Obituary, copy of death certificate, or police report, or
    • Medical Condition Verification form or letter from a medical provider
  • Late registration fee exception documentation
    • A written statement on University letterhead, that is signed by a University staff or faculty member to verify their role in your late registration
