Your diploma
You will receive a printed diploma when you graduate from the University of Minnesota. If you graduated October 2019 or later, you will also receive a secure digital diploma. The University includes the following information on both diploma formats:
- Name
- Degree earned
- The confer date
- Honors earned (if applicable)
Your diploma does not indicate your major or minor. These details are recorded on your official transcript.
Digital Diploma
If you graduated October 2019 or later, you will receive a digital diploma.
You'll receive an email from Parchment (congratulations@parchment.com) 1 to 2 weeks after your degree is awarded. This email will include a link to your digital diploma and instructions to access it, and you will have permanent online access to your digital diploma. Your digital diploma is a secure PDF and an official University document. Like any PDF it can be downloaded, attached to job applications, emailed, or shared. The document’s authenticity will be verified each time it is accessed.
Diploma name
By default, your primary/legal name will print on your diploma. You can add or update a different first or middle name by going to MyU: My Info and entering a "degree name" (see step-by-step instructions). You are responsible for verifying the name that will appear on your diploma by your graduation date.
Your primary/legal last name must match the degree last name. If you need to change your primary/legal name, please update your information prior to your graduation date. You are able to include the following special characters for your first, middle, and last name on your diploma without submitting a legal name change:
- À à, Á á, â, Ã ã, Ä ä, Æ æ
- Ç ç
- È è, Ê ê, Ë ë
- Ì ì, Í í, Î î, Ï ï
- Ñ ñ
- Ò ò, Ó ó, Ô ô, Õ õ, Ö ö
- Ù ù, Ú ú, Û û, Ü ü
- Ý ý, Ÿ ÿ
Diploma address
It is up to you to make sure your diploma is mailed to the correct address. Your diploma will be mailed to the diploma address that appears in MyU: My Info. If that address is not entered (see step-by-step instructions), your diploma will be mailed to your home address.
Mailing timeline
Diplomas for undergraduate students will be mailed 6-8 weeks after the end of term.
Diplomas for graduate and professional degree students will be mailed 4-6 weeks after their degree has been awarded. Please note that the process for awarding degrees begins 1-2 weeks after the graduation date, and that not all degrees are awarded at once.
Domestic shipping
The standard shipping method for diplomas addressed to U.S. addresses is via the United States Postal Service (USPS). Please allow adequate time for delivery. Note that tracking information is not available for USPS.
If you wish to have your diploma mailed via FedEx, complete a FedEx Diploma Delivery Request. The deadline to submit the form is your graduation date. FedEx Diploma Delivery Requests must be turned in to the Twin Cities campus with the appropriate payment, and late forms will not be accepted. FedEx delivery includes tracking information.
International shipping
The standard shipping method for diplomas addressed outside the US is via international priority (at no charge). Make sure your diploma address is up to date in MyU: My Info. You do not need to submit the FedEx Diploma Delivery Request form.
Request a duplicate diploma
You may request a duplicate diploma only after receiving your initial diploma. The University of Minnesota considers duplicate diplomas to be an official document. A duplicate diploma will carry the signatures of the University officials at the time of reissue. It may replace an original diploma, reflect a legal name change, or provide an additional diploma for display.
There is no charge for a duplicate diploma. There is a $15 fee for domestic priority shipping.
